Australian luxury fashion label, ZIMMERMANN, has arrived a little closer to home thanks to the opening of their brand new store at The Mall at Short Hills. Previously available in international retail locations such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods, and Saks 5th Ave, and with flagship stores in places like New York, Paris, London, Sydney, and Milan, ZIMMERMANN’s newest location in New Jersey is an exciting one. It marks the brand’s twentieth store in the United States since the 2011 opening of their first US location in Beverly Hills. After launching stores across the US, UK, Europe, and continuing their international expansion with recent store openings in Spain and China, ZIMMERMANN is always adding devoted followers who love their breathtaking and innovative designs.  

Founded in 1991 by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, this internationally renowned fashion line started from humble beginnings. Nicky Zimmermann began her career by designing and making dresses out of her parents’ garage, and then selling them at the weekend Paddington markets in Sydney. Word quickly spread about her one-of-a-kind dresses and following a two-page editorial layout in VOGUE Australia, Nicky Zimmermann saw the demand for her dresses skyrocket. Boutiques all across Australia began to submit orders, and Simone Zimmermann joined her sister to help with the growing business. Soon after, ZIMMERMANN was born. 

ZIMMERMANN’s early success was rooted in Nicky and Simone’s innovative approach to creating flattering swimwear, incorporating elements of high fashion into sexy and sculptural one pieces and bikinis. While they originally gained notoriety for their sophisticated and fashionable Swim and Resort collections, the brand has blossomed since the 90’s to now include ZIMMERMANN Swimwear, Separates, Kids, Footwear, and Accessories. ZIMMERMANN is known for their delicate, original prints, high quality fabrics, feminine details, and classic designs with a modern spin. With its opening held on December 17, 2022, the ZIMMERMANN store at The Mall at Short Hills is designed to be an immersive, dynamic experience for the shopper with discerning taste. Designed by Studio McQualter and spanning 1,712 square feet, ZIMMERMANN’s newest store location seeks to offer a peaceful respite from the frenetic energy of a shopping mall. In collaboration with local metalworkers, a bespoke metal storefront greets customers as they arrive. Custom-designed terrazzo floors and mosaic tiles transport shoppers to another time and place, and elevated ceilings complete the transformation of a traditional shopping space. There is a spacious lounge area lined with luxe curtains and bespoke handwoven rug, and purchases are rung up in a funky foiled room which draws design inspiration from Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory.

“The space is understated and pared back but with a sense of fun – bringing some unique Australian touches, which is such an integral part of each one of our stores,” says Creative Director & Co-Founder, Nicky Zimmermann. Indeed, artwork by both American and Australian based artists Milton Glaser, Chuck Overton, and Laith McGregor line the walls, as well as ceramic vases by Australian artist Nori Lindsay. In keeping with ZIMMERMANN’s modernist aesthetic, vintage furniture from the era is scattered throughout the store and paired with quintessential decorative pieces from the period.

ZIMMERMANN’s intricate design and attention to detail carry through in their Resort ‘23 collection, which could quite literally go from the rack to your suitcase to the sands of Positano. Nautical touches such as knotted rope sandals, elegant sailboat prints, and pearl and lace accents make it easy to envision wearing the entire collection on your next seaside vacation.
